Born in to a farming family, managing director, Martin Grundon began his farming career after leaving school, taking over the running of his father's established pig and cattle farm.
The subsequent decline in the pig industry inspired Martin to look at ways of diversifying the business, and in 1995 after obtaining a waste transfer licence, he set up a waste a transfer station. The transfer station is still operational today.

Planning permission for an open windrow composting site for processing green and food waste, on what is now WLC's maturation site, was granted in 2000. The project was unable to proceed due to the outbreak of foot and mouth.

Still keen on pursuing his composting initiative and committed to partnering with local authorities, Martin began a period of extensive research in to setting-up an in-vessel composting facility. Planning permission for the business was granted in 2003.

WLC is a family-run business and two of Martin's children, Suzanne and Bruce, together with son-in-law Paul are strategic contributors in the day-to-day running of the company.
