At WLC, everything received at our 100,000 tonne capacity site is composted in-vessel, complying with the 2003 EU Animal By-Products Regulations (ABPR), the only method accepted by Defra for processing kerbside collected kitchen waste.
Immediately upon arrival, material is shredded before beginning its rigorous decontamination process in one our sixteen, 220 tonne capacity vessels, located in barrier one.
Once the vessels are full, temperature probes are inserted in to the compost for accurate temperature measurement. In line with ABPR requirements, records are kept to demonstrate to the State Veterinary Service that material has reached the required temperature of 60 degrees centigrade for two consecutive days. This stage of the process typically takes between ten and 14 days.
At the end of this period, material is transferred across to barrier two, featuring a further sixteen, 220 tonne capacity vessels, and the process repeated.
Once the in-vessel stage of the process is finished, we transport the material to our adjacent maturation site via moving floor trailer and windrows are formed. Material is turned regularly for up to eight weeks, prior to screening to end-user requirements
